Say hello to my little friend

We have spent some time talking about cotton top tamarins on Radio Harambe. We even had the pleasure of talking to Dr. Ann Savage, Conservation Director at Disney's Animal Kingdom and founder of Proyecto Titi, a group dedicated to protecting this species.

The Cotton Top is found only in the forests of northern Colombia and has suffered from deforestation, the illegal pet trade and other difficult issues. Today it's one of the 25 most critically endangered primates.

The park has always had the animal and recently built a nice new exhibit where the animal above currently resides. And Disney has recently announced they will be concentrating conservation efforts on 10 different animal groups including the tamarin.

Building a better nest

One of the best things about walking around the Animal Kingdom is to see the animals busy doing something. Chasing each other, tending to babies or in this case, building a nest.

This saddle billed stork must be getting ready for a new batch of hatchlings. These guys build their nests with big sticks and the like, much different than small song birds.

OTTERS!!

The next time you are on Discovery Island, take a minute and go see the Asian Small-Clawed Otter exhibit. As you enter the park, it is on the path to the right of the Tree of Life heading towards Africa. If you are lucky, you will see these guys playing and romping around.

A Mini Tumble Monkey

Monkeys are fun to watch. And the Cotton-top Tamarins on Discovery Island can be really fun to watch. They are amazingly acrobatic and ridiculously cute! And this guy looks a lot like on the "tumble monkeys", don't you think?

While we love to watch these guys, and they are a great addition to the cast at DAK, it is important to also remember they are critically endangered in the wild. Only a few thousand are left.

Moving On Up!

The cotton-top tamarins just received a brand new and much improved home on Discovery Island, over by the Creature Comforts store. Slowly but surely, they will be introduced to their swanky new digs, so keep a look out for them. This photo was taken in their old habitat.

A Little Afternoon Dip

The small-clawed asian otters recently had some woe done on their habitat in Discovery Island. Have you spent anytime watching these guys? If not, you really should because they can often be hilarious and playful.

Photo Bombing at the Tree of Life!

We talk a lot on Jambo Everyone about the so-called "hidden gems" of Disney's Animal Kingdom, the amazing little things that most guests walk right past on their way to making a FastPass return time.  One of those gems is the pathways around the Tree of Life, where you will find some cute-as-heck Kangaroos and, apparently, African Crowned Cranes.

This photo was meant to be a photo of a slumbering kangaroo, and a nice one at that.  Than up from the bottom of my view finder popped this crane!  I was a victim of a photo bomb by a bird.

Jump Right In!

It is almost impossible to not use the word "cute" when looking at the Asian Small-Clawed Otters found on Discovery Island by the Tree of Life.  These guys are adorable and very fun to watch, as they chase each other around the habitat.  This photo was taken just seconds before the otter dove into the water head first.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Here is a photo I took quite some time ago.  One of the great hidden gems of Disney's Animal Kingdom is the quiet and beautiful Discovery Island Trails, in the shadow of the Tree of Life.  Take a walk through them and you may come across this giant reptile.

The Galapagos Tortoise is the largest tortoise in the world, coming in at over five feet long and more than 800 pounds.  But I learned all that from Safari Mike so follow that blog and soon you too may learn all about the Galapagos Tortoise.
